thanks for the input everyone. at this point i've done quite a bit of research on the topic and spoke to both my oncologist and clinical pharmacist at unc hospital. i thought i would share what i learned because there seems to be a lot of different ideas circulating.
all three of my sources agree that while there are warnings issued for ssri-gleevec interaction, the direction of the effect is not generally problematic. basically the issue is that gleevec and ssri's compete for the same primary metabolizing enzyme, CYP3A4, which preferentially binds to gleevec. this can result in higher plasma levels of the ssri, and less commonly, higher plasma levels of gleevec. this is easily addressed by lowering ssri dosage to compensate for slower clearance. best practice for concurrent ssri and gleevec treatment seems to be to start with a lower dose of the ssri, and keep a keen eye out for side effects suggesting too high levels of either the ssri or gleevec. thanks again for the input. daniel On Jan 28, 1:12 pm, kellyelise <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi Daniel: > > I was put on an antidepressant about the same time I started the > Gleevec.
