I don't know anything about psa tests, and their increase after cml
diagnosis. However, I am an ovarian cancer survivor and was long before my
cml
diagnosis. The test for ovarian is a ca-125. I was followed for nine years
after ovarian treatment and my ca-125 was always in the normal range.
After being on Gleevec for a few months my ca-125 levels began to increase.
This brought me much stress as my doctors tried to figure out if I had two
cancers. I had many ct scans, much blood work, and a pet scan. The only
thing my doctors could find after watching me closely for three years was an
increasing ca-125 and slowly increasing fluid retention. I developed
ascites and bi-lateral pleural effusions. The docs at MSKCC all agreed that
it
must be a recurrence of ovarian cancer. I was scheduled for a laparoscopy
by a gynecologic oncologist to find the cancer. Well....he looked and
looked, and took many tissue samples, and to the surprise of all, there was no
gynecologic cancer. Whew! Finally, the team of oncologists concluded that
the fluid retention which was most likely caused by Gleevec caused the
ca-125 to give a false positive reading. I was taken off Gleevec and switched
to Tasigna. Guess what happened? No more fluid retention and the ca-125
is now back within normal ranges!!! What a relief! The Gleevec had also
caused me to have extremely low protein levels, which have also now
normalized. I guess what I'm trying to say is not to panic if another test
comes
out high until you have more information. Sometimes one drug can cause
reactions that even the doctors don't know about.
