New Foundation Launches Global Support and Partnership Program for Chronic
Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

The newly formed International Chronic Myeloid Leukemia Foundation (iCMLf)
has launched the Emerging Regions Support and Partnership (ERSAP) program at
the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH). The ERSAP
Preceptorship Project will commence in 2010, providing training, education
and support for 30 clinicians in emerging countries each year.
The iCMLf is a charitable foundation recently established by a group of
leading hematologists with a strong interest in CML. The mission of the
iCMLf is to improve the outcomes for patients with CML by fostering and
coordinating global clinical and research collaborations and therefore
improving clinical practice and disease monitoring in CML around the world.
The launch of the ERSAP preceptorship project, supporting and educating 30
clinicians in 2010 sees the first step on the journey to achieve this goal.
"The improved survival in CML directly attributable to the use of tyrosine
kinase inhibitors is so dramatic that these new agents must be made
available to the greatest possible number of eligible patients as rapidly as
possible throughout the whole world", said Professor John Goldman, Chairman
of the iCMLf.
Clinicians in emerging economic regions may not have easy access to updated
knowledge and skills regarding best practice for CML patients. The ERSAP
project launched at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology
(ASH) will provide training, education and support for 30 clinicians each
year. To facilitate the sharing of best practice for CML patients in
emerging regions, the project will be open to hematologists from developing
countries with an interest in therapy and monitoring of CML patients. The
preceptorships are designed to provide one-on-one tuition and practical
experience.
"Access to up to date treatment and follow-up monitoring is essential to
treat CML effectively", said Jan Geissler, being a CML patient, co-founder
of the global patient platform 'CML Advocates Network' as well as
Communications Coordinator of the iCMLf. "We have been closely collaborating
with CML patient representatives across the globe, and we know how
challenging it can be to get access to appropriate care. As patients we very
much welcome the initiative of the iCMLf to share best practice in emerging
regions".
Five specialist CML centers around the globe will act as hosts for up to six
visiting clinicians. The CML expert centers enrolled in 2010 include
Hammersmith Hospital, London, Royal Adelaide Hospital Australia,
S.Orsola-Malpighi University Hospital, Italy, MD Anderson Cancer Centre, USA
and OHSU Knight Cancer Institute, USA.
Another ERSAP Project in development is the Partnership Project. This iCMLf
project will partner expert CML centers with centers in developing countries
to facilitate exchange of scientists, clinicians and nurses involved in CML
care, share monitoring and research, to run joint clinical trials, share
protocols, and conduct joint training activities. This will provide vital
support and networks for clinicians treating CML in developing countries.
The ERSAP Preceptorship Project is currently funded with an unrestricted
grant from Novartis Oncology. Additional funding is currently being sought
for the ERSAP Project.

Hey group,
I do hope that this will go through

It has been awhile since I have posted and forgot my passwords.
This is an update on Little Jonathan. I'm sure after you read awhile that
some of you will remeber him.
He's really not so little anymore..
He'll be 16 in May. He loves to play Tournament Paintball. A very
agressive sport but he has become quite good at it and I love to see him
smile.
So I grin and let him play with nothing but encouragement.
He's grown to be 5'7 1/2 and weighs 114 lbs. for a long time he stayed
the same and we were quite concerned.
Jonathan had serious pain in his feet for a year or more. Now that has all
disappeared. He had stomach problems here
and there.... but I started him on Food Enzymes and that seemed to really
help.
He's a blessing to all of us. A boy that seems to have more wisdom on
life then some of us older folks.

Take care
In His peace
Fran & Jonathan

Hi Pat, you and I were dx the same year. I never reached 0 either and
Gleevec quit working for me-I was put on Tasigna and it quit after 8 months
and
am now on Sprycell. My onc just didn't understand why Gleevec quit on me
as he said most of his patients were doing good on it.
Good to hear from you-I was dx in Jan of 2004.
Hang in there CML WARRIOR.
Blessings Jeanie<3

If any of you remember me, I'm Pat from TN. I was diagnosed Nov.28th
'04, being treated at Vanderbilt in Nashville and I am celebrating my
5th anniversary. I apologize for not keeping in touch, my computer
died and it took me a while to replace it due to the economic times. I
just want to say thank you again for all the members who were here
when I needed them the most...you'll never know how much your kindness
and sharing your experiences help me cope and to understand.
I am still on Gleevec 400mgs a day and have never reached the big
zero. I still have a lot of the side effects but nothing like in the
beginning. My main health problem is the emphysema I have. I've been
trying to catch up on all the posts I've missed. Many names I am
familiar with and then I see more newcomers. I just want to encourage
the newly diagnosed CML warriors to continue to be a part of this
group, as there are some very caring people here ready to answer any
and all questions.
My days are pretty confined to home since I am trying to avoid
contacting the flu whether it be swine or regular. I have a 2 year old
grandson presently living with me so I devote my time and what energy
I have to him. I am getting more and more short of breath so my
activities are limited. Fighting emphysema is harder than the cml and
more depressing. The CML was just something I got but the emphysema, I
did to myself by smoking for years, so it's been very hard to deal
with.
I hope all is doing well and I wish for you all a joyous Christmas
season. I'll be in touch.
Love,Peace,Hope & Prayers, Pat (the turtle)
