Hi Ahmed,

Sorry your going through these gout attacks. Having a uric acid count of 8.4
is sure to give you an attack every once in a while. I know because I have
been battling the Gout for a long time. In fact ever since I had my bone
marrow transplant over 21 years ago.

To be honest with you your doctor gave you Allopurinol, but only 100 Mg to
start with. Now since I am very familiar with this drug and the effects of
the Gout you have to see how much your uric counts drop in a few weeks from
now. Better still maybe a month or two. I have a hunch it will drop a bit
but not where it should be at, or about 5 would be excellent.

Something else surprises me is that he told you not to change your diet. You
should limit your intake of any foods that are high in Purines. Things like
organ meat, mushrooms, prepared meats, beef, sea food like any types of
shell fish and especially beer and wine or any types of alcohol.

You may want to find out what types of foods have high levels of Purines and
avoid them. Whenever you get a major Gout attack you may get up in the
middle of the night and feel as if someone hit your big toe with a hammer.

Allopurinol will lower your uric acid that you won't get this, but it has to
be the right amount and you have to take it every day. Frankly I don't know
why your doctor didn't start you off with taking 300 Mg every day, then
repeat your blood work in a few months then determine if a lower dose would
be appropriate.

Maybe he didn't want to first start you off on a higher dose because of your
CML, but I'm not sure about that. You might want to ask him. Either way your
blood tests should tell if you need to be on a higher dose.

I remember when I was first diagnosed with CML I was started on 300 Mg of
Allopurinol and stayed on it for about one year until I got my bone marrow
transplant. I was then off of it until about fifteen years later because my
joints, mainly in my big toe, the side of it would hurt like the dickens.

The Gout is actually a form of Arthritis that deposit sharp chards of
Chrystal's, usually in the lower extremities but can be any ware in any
joint. It is those sharp microscopic crystals that are near nerves that
cause the terrible pain.

Anyway, yes I agree with you about life being good, and in our belief in
HIM. And Ahmed since your belief parallels mine in the belief of GOD I would
like to include something for you. It is called a patients prayer, and it
was pasted on the outside of the plastic bubble that I used to live in more
then 20 years ago by a close friend of mine. I used to say it to myself
every day, and it made my realise that we all have GOD's mercy if we truly
believe in HIM.

                       A PATIENT’S PRAYER

Eternal GOD, source of healing, out of my distress I call upon you. Help me
to sense your presence at this difficult time. You have already sent me
gifts of your goodness: The skill of my physician, the concern of others who
help me, the compassion of those I love, and who love me.

I pray that I may be worthy of all these, today and in the days to come.
Help me to banish all bitterness; let not despair overcome me. Grant me
patience when the hours are heavy; give me courage whenever there is hurt or
disappointment.

Keep me trustful in your love, O GOD. Give me strength for today, and hope
for tomorrow. To your loving hands I commit my spirit when asleep and when
awake. You are with me; I shall not fear. Help me, O GOD, in my time of
need.
Ahmed, I wish you good luck, and may GOD keep on blessing you
