Good evening, everyone:

This is the letter that was sent out from Tracey to let everyone know
about Zavie. I did not hear anything about a "stroke." I do know
that while Zavie was down here in Miami, he was complaining about his
leg and the extreme about of discomfort he was in. He was in good
humor from January through March 2011. I will try to check on this
bit of information. The doctors were able to take out the clot in
his leg but he developed another clot in his brain. The letter below
will explain what has been going on.

Hugs,

Hi Everyone,

Zavie's wife Ida has given me permission to write to the group
explaining the
situation he's in.
Currently he is in "critical but stable condition" at the hospital
after
suffering a series of complications which are unrelated to his CML.

As some of you know, he's been battling peripheral artery disease in
his foot
and has suffered terrible pain from this for months. His toe became
infected a
few weeks ago and eventually became bad enough that a hospital
admittance was
required for IV antibiotics.

After having an angiogram last week to assess his arteries, he
developed a
clot in his leg which the doctors thankfully managed to eliminate.
Sadly
though, the balancing act of trying to get his INR at the right level
(not too
high, not too low), has been very challenging.

Unfortunately, on Sunday night he developed another clot near his
cerebellum
which required emergency brain surgery. While the surgery appears to
have been
successful, he's been on a respirator and in an induced coma ever
since. All
of this has been further complicated by the fact that Zavie has had
congestive
heart failure for years.

As you can imagine this is an extraordinarily difficult time for Ida
and their
daughters as the uncertainty of Zavie's recovery is very real. The
doctors have
given him a 50/50 chance at this point.

If you would like to offer support or encouragement, I will be
collecting all
emails and giving them to his family. You can either post to the
group or write
to me privately and I will be sure to forward them on.

Tracey
