I remember being left on my own just enough to explore and to learn and not
because my parents couldn't be bothered or didn't know how to teach me. I
remember being read to daily until I was four, then being taught to
read and being encouraged to do so A LOT. I remember my parents being
present, and being a solid presence in my life. I remember that it was
expected that I would do well in school and if a problem arose, someone
always being there to address it. I definitely remember it being a
given that I would be polite.
I do not consider television and computer games to be
substitute parents. Instead, they are mindless and addictive baby-sitters.
I'm not certain what they teach, other than selfishness and emotional
distancing.
