Jim,This is spam that is spread via a virus or malware. The spammers find a vulnerable web site and add their content then compromise someone's email account and send spam "from" them to every contact in their address book directing them to the site. Or it can be "from" someone in the address book to the others. I've seen this many places. One clue is that in addition to not making any sense is that the URL (internet address) will usually contain computer-generated gibberish like /pptdhas/bzacgsuek whereas human generated URL's normally have strings like /pages/newsletter/If you see something like this that appears to be from you (like Ruth). First look at all the addressees. If you recognize only a few then it's someone who has you in their address book that has been compromised. My rules:Don't open any attachment you aren't expecting.Don't open a link like the one in "Ruth's" email.Maintain an anti-virus program. I use AVG (from the Check Republic). You can download and install the full version for 30 days. After that click on renew and I suggest select "downgrade to free version" for most home users. Their paid version (required for business users) is certainly worth what they charge for it.Maintain or routinely scan with anti-malware. I use Emsisoft (German). Like AVG you install their full protection scheme and can select the free (manual) anti-malware scanner which is all most users need. Their paid version is one of the best total protection suites available. There are of course many other choices for anti-virus and internet protection software. If you're determined enough you can also look at the full header on an email to see the originating IP address although that won't help if they actually used a Yahoo or Google account. Then locate the geographical location of the address. Most of this is coming from China, Russia, Pakistan, India and Africa. When I was webmaster for a wonderful school for autistic children in Houston our "store" site was attacked dozens or hundreds of times by the same spammer. I fought back. Apparently he didn't think there was any need to obscure his information. The attacks stopped when I published his name, address and apartment number in Moscow. (You can't normally get that much information but he was careless in addition to being scruple-less.) Patrick --- On Mon, 3/4/13, DAWN RODEGHIER <[email protected]> wrote:
