Hi Millie,

Well, you do have a wonderful attitude in spite of what your going through
having all of that pain. I admire you very much for all that you do for others.
I know that you can't ever imagine how much you have helped them along.

I am lucky because I know what my reason is, and I do whatever I can to try and
help others. Every person has a reason, it's just that most don't really know
what that reason is.

You Millie know exactly what it is, and you take full advantage of it. That is
why I admire you.

In fact most everyone on here has a reason they just don't know it. I read just
about every post on here and what do I see? It is one person helping another
person. That is their reason but they may not yet realize it. And in doing so
they actually help themselves and others.

CML is a very powerful disease and it actually brings out the best in most of
us. I always say that it is a disease of both the body and the mind, and if one
has a good attitude then they have helped themselves as well as others.

Anyway, you asked about how we celabrate Channuka. It is called the festival of
lights. We light a candle each night for eight nights. We also present our
children with presents for each of those nights. We have family and guests over
to share a wonderful meal. My wife Rachelle (Shelly) is a wonderful cook, and
she makes a turkey with all of the dressings.

She has a delicious recipe for a sweet potato casserole which I would like to
share with everyone. By the way Thanksgiving and Channuka fall out at the same
time this year. This delicious dish is good for either holiday as well as any
other holiday like Christmas. I guarantee that you will love it.

Shelly’s Sweet Potato Casserole

Ingredients needed:

One large can of Yams
One can of Apple Pie filling (Sugar free if you desire)
One can of Cherry Pie filling (Sugar free if you desire)
One can of whole berry Cranberry Sauce
Orange Marmalade (one tablespoon, or more to suit your taste)
Apricot Preserves (one tablespoon or more to suit your taste)

Start by using a can of Apple Pie filling. Also, add a can of Cherry Pie
filling. Put this into a cooking casserole, and then add a large can of
drained, cut up Yams. Cut to your liking, or about one to two inch pieces.

In a separate mixing bowl put in a can of whole Berry Cranberry Sauce, add one
tablespoon of Orange Marmalade, and then add one tablespoon of Apricot
Preserves. Mix it all together. Pour mixture over the Yams, place covered in
the oven at 350 degrees for approximately 20 to 30 minutes. Be sure to keep an
eye on it to make sure it doesn’t overcook or burn, then serve and enjoy.

We would like to wish everyone a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving…

Martin and Rachelle Gartenberg

Hi Marty....Thanks for saying that I have a positive attitude. I have tried to
keep one most of my life. In the past 20 years, I feel God has put me on this
earth to help others and I do try. Perhaps, the pain that I have makes me
realize how much everyone suffers with this Cancer...no matter what kind. I
have found that people can turn to me and, some how, I find the words to help
them. I have lost a lot of our family members and miss them so much, but
always hope that I did was able to say the right words and pray for them. I
never thought I'd be the one left, but here I am. I find in you, what I've
been able to do for others and that's encourage them to live each day as if
it's their last. Enjoy all of the little things, like my wonderful children
and grandchildren. I do not understand people that pity themselves and sit and
wait to die. I will give it all I have, and when God sees fit, I'll pass on to
a better place. I'm not bragging, so don't take it that way. I admire
everyone on this site because we do share and help one another.

I wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. I'm cooking our meal. I hate to go out
as then I don't have all of those wonderful leftovers. I also want to wish you
a wonderful Chanukah. Tell me what that day is like for you as I'm not
familiar with it. I do know that it's a special time for you though.

I did get my blood test back on my Polymialgia (sp) and my numbers were up, so
that's why the pain has increased. They give me prednisone for that and I
don't want to increase it because of it causing problems with my liver
functions. I always say, if it weren't for the pain, I'd be fine, but learning
to deal with it isn't easy either. I believe that's why I am on here so much
as it helps me deal with the pain. Also my needlework helps me get my mind off
of it. Years ago, a very special doctor (cardiologist) told me that the
needlework that I do is my therapy and I believe that he was right. He has
since passed away much to young from this Cancer we all deal with. He had lung
cancer and I hope that I was able to help him. His son is now my Cardiologist
and we have become close. He's the same age as my one son...

I've rattled on and on, so forgive me for that. Like I said, it does help me
to write to all of you. You have become family and I love you all.
Love, hugs, and 18's to all,
Millie

Hi Michele,

It's really very simple. You either have a good attitude or a bad attitude.
Having a good attitude will actually help you even while your fighting a
disease like Leukemia. Having a bad attitude will actually make you physically
worse.

I want to tell you a story...

About twenty four years ago I had CML and I was in blast chrisis with a white
blood count being over 480,000. I wasn't expected to survive but I never gave
up. Thank GOD that my sister was a matching donor.

I had to have a bone marrow transplant and in doing so I had to live in a small
5x9 plastic bubble for seven months. Before I had my transplant I shared a room
with another cancer patient for about two weeks. He was hooked up to tubes and
one was a feeding tube. He was terminal but he had a very positive attitude but
was really suffering.

The first day that I was in with him he asked me to get a video tape from his
case because he couldn't get out of bed. I remember that tape was I love lucy.
She worked in a candy factory and kept on stuffing the candy in her mouth
because it just kept on comming on the conveyer belt. We were both laughing our
A**'s off. Then another tape this time it was the Marks brothers. Can you
inagine two men sharing a room both considered terminal, laughing?

Well, it seems that we both had our blood drawn every two hours twenty four
hours a day for a week. I wondered why so many blood draws.

About a year after I finished up with my transplant I got around to asking my
doctor about all of those blood draws. He told me that he was measuring both of
our Endorphine levels and they were off the wall in both of us.

Now the kicker... This "terminal" man survived and is still alive today cancer
free. Was this a freak occurance? Well, I don't know but what I do know is that
we are both still alive today, so you tell me what you think.

Now just take a look at Skip. Here he is without taking any TKI's. He tried
most of them but none worked so he hasn't been on any for a very long time.
Skip has survived for more then thirty five years.

Now let's look at Millie. This very brave woman suffers so much from pain and
other things but you want to know what? She has one terrific attitude.

This also applied to Zavie, Lottie and many more. Their attitudes kept them
alive for a long time

I can go on and on about most of the people on this site. I think that you are
all very brave worriors, probably after their initial fright wares off their
attitude then kicks in.

18's,

Marty
