*MEDICAL aid: The medical camp organised by the Solidarity Youth Movement at
the Kurumbatty division of Kumbazha Estate at Chengara, near Konni, on
Saturday. *
PATHANAMTHITTA: The Solidarity Youth Movement (SYM), youth wing of the
Jamaat-e Islami, organised a medical camp at Chengara in the Kurumbatty
division of the Kumbazha estate of Harrisons Malayalam Ltd. on Saturday.
Abdul Salam, Shyju Mohamed and Muhammed Minshad, doctors, reached the estate
through a forest tract from Njaloor, bypassing Athumbamkulam, where
plantation workers have been staging a road blockade protesting against the
encroachment on the estate by Sadhu Jana Vimochana Samyukta Vedi workers.
The SYM leaders who accompanied the medical team said the camp was held as
the official machinery had failed to extend medical care to hundreds of
landless people waging a land struggle for 14 months. As many as 500 people
attended the camp and the medical team supplied free medicines.
They said a good number of people, mainly women and children, had
water-borne diseases. A small stream passing through the estate border was
the lone drinking water source to hundreds of families.
The round-the-clock road blockade under the Joint Trade Union Action Council
had blocked supply of food and medicines to the encroached area.
Though District Collector P.C. Sanalkumar had directed the Health
authorities to conduct a medical camp every week, the blockade had come in
the way.
The Vedi workers did not turn up at the medical camp organised by the Health
Department a few days ago, protesting against the failure to hold it on the
rubber estate.
Denial of freedom
Chengara Solidarity Forum convener M.D. Thomas alleged that the road
blockade meant denial of basic facilities and freedom to hundreds of Vedi
workers.
As many as 100 sick people, including Vedi State general secretary Seleena
Prakanam, have been admitted to General Hospital, Pathanamthitta, and
various other hospitals, he said. He alleged that the Communist Party of
India (Marxist) and the State government had been trying to portray the land
struggle as an extremist movement to defeat the struggle.
