RE: Open Source vs. FREE - WAS RE: [cms-list] Are there any
.AsporC# Open Source Content Mangement Systems out there?.. (Nuno Lopes)

I hope I'm doing this right...I've never posted here before.

Anyhow, Nuno, I agree with you 110%. I am also in the middle of developing
portal/CMS software (www.sitebeater.com). I guess that means that we could
be competitors! :)

But, I also spent a great deal of time trying to decide how to market my
product. Should I go open source? Or, pay? I basically came to the same
conculsions as you did -- open source is only going to pay those who USE
your product. I don't know for sure (of course), but I'm willing to bet
that those guys who made C, PERL, etc. didn't receive more than several
thousand dollars -- if they were lucky -- over the lifetime of their
"products". Course I could be wrong...

I was also thinking the only way for me to go open souce was to already
have a strong enough client base to support my company. Then, while I had
my client base, I'd create my CMS/portal software. Then, once all that was
done, and I was using it in-house with all my clients, I'd release it (or
a subset of it) to the public. ...nahh, too involved, too long (years to
get clients), and I'm a developer not a marketer so getting clients is
ultra hard for me.

And, going from personal experience here. Everyone wants a freebie. I've
had --thousands-- of people download my beta software and only TWO
(!!!TWO!!!) have offered to help with the testing. TtttWWwwwOoooo! ...give
me a freaken break. How many of those would actually PAY me for consulting
if all they are looking for is a freebie? Like, none.

Anyhow, Nuno, you and I should get together and swap stories :)
