A lot of commercial systems have forum capabilities built in. If all you want is email subscription you might like to try integrating something like Majordomo with your CMS. This can be done real quickly and works effectively.

I'd agree with this approach, I think you'll be chasing your tail if you
try to implement the capabilities of a Forum software into your CMS.
Better to implement the two separately and figure out a way to get the
CMS to properly generate new postings in the Forum.

That's what we did with Article Manager. We had enough people ask for
this, that we set it up to work with Discus, Gforum, Ikonboard,
Ubbthreads, Ubbclassic5, and Vbulletin.
