A word is simply a sequence of characters delimited by a chosen
delimiter,
usually a blank. You have word-oriented functionality in Pipe already
(wordsep).

"Nyt{r" is a perfectly valid Danish word. Is it also for you?
Looking to POSIX is no help here, for they bit the bullet and did the
localisation many years ago.
