While Kris is correct in general, one could for FBS data sets compute the TTR of a given record and use POINT to seek to it.
Those who remember FORTRAN IV on OS/360 prior to release 6 will recall that DEFINE FILE did not arrive until the direct access method was shipped. DOS FORTRAN IV supported it right off the bat using a sequential data set. Those were the days. j.
