[CMS-PIPELINES] STRIP only to the right of a column?

I can actually just use STRIP TRAILING for what I'm working on at the
moment.  But I got to thinking, what if I wanted to keep the trailing
blanks *except* those out past a particular column?  The simplest that
comes to mind is:

  (end /) ... | a: chop 80 | b: gather | join 1 | ...
       / a: | strip trailing | b:

Have I overlooked something more straightforward?
