Trivial solution, in case it's helpful after all this time: Write the output in fixed record format. Sadly, that's not so trivial for what I was thinking of: using it on TSO. I'd have to get around to doing that allocate-and-write thing I asked about a couple years ago and Hobart provided sample code for. ¬R
