My apologies.  There are several things working here that for a moment
had slipped my mind.

The best advice I can give is to read the chapter on configuration
variables (or PIPE AHELP COONFIGVARS).  In particular the first note.

You need to specify a directory instead of a mode letter to get full
SFS semantics.  Or use >sfs if there is a directory behind the mode
letter.
