Here's what I've come up with:
Direct="USER DIRECT A"
FINDME="userid"
"PIPE (endchar ?)",
"| <" Direct,
"| SPEC 1-71 STRIP 1)",
"| NFIND *"||,
"|a:ABBREV USER 1",
"| SPEC /USER/ 1 W2-* NW",
"|b:FANINANY",
"| FRTARGET FIND USER" FindME||,
"|c:DROP FIRST 1",
"| TOTARGET FIND USER"||,
"|d:FANINANY",
"|CONSOLE",
"?a:",
"|b:",
"?c:",
"|d:"
Seems more complicated than it needs to be.

Subject: Isolating a section of the directory.
How can I extract a section of a directory (a user's directory entry)
omitting any intervening comments?
1) Directory statements are coded in 1-71
2) A commented line is one that starts with an
asterisk (not necessarily in column 1)
3) From USER (user can be abbreviated to 1 character,
'U') + userid (any number of spaces between
4) To, but not including the next USER statement
ABBREV is only a single stage and cannot be used in conjunction with a
SPEC or PICK.
Start:
Direct="USER DIRECT A"
FINDME="userid"
"PIPE (endchar ?)",
"| <" Direct,
"| SPEC 1-71 STRIP 1)",
"| NFIND *"||,
(now what)
