Whoops--I changed from JOINCONT to DEBLOCK in midstream and forgot that I'd had JOINCONT adding those blanks between segments for me! The problem with JOINCONT was that NOT always implies KEEP, so I had to chop the delimiter off myself afterwards: ... | joincont not "::" | chop -2 | ... The DEBLOCK isn't working because you dropped the last pipeline that feeds the delimiters back in. Add this to the end and you can get rid of the extra SPLIT (and stop buffering the entire file): '? tail:' , '| all:' ¬R
