I finally got back to this and that's exactly it, thanks. Learning the SYSNAMES operand of LISTALC let me list the temporary data set with LISTDS and see that it had no RECFM or LRECL before the EXECIO, and FB 80 afterward. Filling those in in the allocation (and adding a PAD to the pipe) did the trick. ¬R
