Thanks much. Worked great. But now that I've started processing the response from each command, LINGER becomes superfluous because I now SEVER only after receiving the response from the last command. Hmmm. Will I need to deal with the possibility that a response may be split across packets? Ugh. Maybe A2E | DEBLOCK CRLF will suffice. SMTP states pretty clearly that its record separator is CRLF. HTML allows any of CRLF, LF, or CR. Ugly because CR is not self-delimiting. In the worst case, if CR occurs at the end of a packet, it's necessary to read the next packet to see whether it begins with LF. Thanks again, gil
