Define a VAFP printer and point printmc to that. Max lrecl=32767.

Works a charm. Got 500+ character lines through it. Now
to see whether SMTP likes them.

I see tags. That shouldn't bother anyone. I saw "VAFP" in the
CP RM. Somehow the description scared me off. 32767 feels like
a restriction imposed by the CCW structure.

John H.: I was lucky; simply:

    PIPE READER | APPEND LITERAL | PRINTMC

... worked with the CCWs in the reader file.

Can you explain more about how MVS sent a file so wide?

Yup:

//*
//STEP     EXEC  PGM=IEBGENER
//SYSPRINT  DD   SYSOUT=(,)
//SYSIN     DD   DUMMY
//SYSUT2    DD   SYSOUT=(,),DEST=(vmhost,vmuser)
//SYSUT1    DD   *
    ... (Long, long lines go here.)

Thanks, all,
gil
