Hi John,

Sigh, I forgot to go uplevel. I'm still on z/VM 6.3 in this VM, normally I'm 
running in the uplevel distribution when I need to use the newer features such 
as c2d(8). But in this pipeline that wasn't required so I didn't switch to the 
new pipelines.

As of z/VM 6.4, everyone can stuff a string into a counter.  There are tons of 
examples in the chapter "specs reference".
