But Glenn is right that it doesn't cover the null string. I don't find
myself too often in the situation where a null string would do and I don't
want to use a REXX variable to prime the pump.

You probably didn't use this with LITERAL :-)   (well, I sometimes do too,
and it takes a while to find the problem, just like you can spend a while
when using "c2t" when you meant "x2t" and dates look somewhat reasonable,
but wrong)
