Although a member of the other wsg list for some time this is my first post
to the cms list. Basically im a newb to cms systems but see that its
becoming a neccesary tool. I want to start off on the right track.

I have been looking at Tikiwiki, but there is a copy of coldfusion in the
office. Im not sure which way to go. although i dont want to use .net
technology

Any advice ...?

Yes,

1) don't hijack discusssion threads :-)

2) don't base your choice of a foundation server technology on one
particular application. Look at what's available and see where
they fit into your learning plan. Or try them *all* out and see
   what feels good to *you*.

Obviously PHP is free, and in widespread use. Now that ColdFusion
is Java-based, it may be a good entry to more "enterprise"-level
environments. Alternatively, you could just jump straight into
Java. Or Ruby, or Python, or ... there's lots of alternatives to
   .Net :-)

You'll probably find the most mature open-source apps available
based on PHP and Java, though.

HTH, and good luck,
