I am new to CMS and am looking for an open source php/mysql solution
that can grow with the client (this will be quite a large site
ultimately).

You may try to check <http://www.agimo.gov.au/practice/delivery/checklists/select_cms> - it's about defining needs and picking CMS.

1. Textpattern
2. WordPress
and am interested in your opinions regarding the latest versions and the
advantages and disadvantages of each.

The latest versions (and upcoming WP 2.0 - now in RC) are powerful for SME needs. We're using WP for some of our implementations (<http://www.bonsoir.cz/>, <http://www.skbu.cz/>, <http://www.zbiroh.com/>, <http://www.janbrasna.com/>, <http://go.uu.cz/> (beta) etc.) and that's pretty fine. Only thing I'm lacking is more precise user role delegation.

I am looking (where possible) for:

1. ease of maintaining (X)HTML/CSS validation
2. active support forums
3. static and dynamic pages
4. a good forum plugin (for private and public posts)
5. comprehensive admin panel
6. secure, member-only login to specific sections
7. subcategories
8. wide range of plugins

Maybe Drupal.org would be sufficent?

To be honest - nothing works out of the box, there's always a need for some customisation and tweaking the solution for the particular demand.
