So just exactly what are the XML Schema features doing in MS Word, Open

"doing"? Dude, I didn't know it was my turn to watch 'em! :-)
Uh, well. Aside from XML Spy -- no idea where that snuck into the
conversation -- I don't know anything about "XML Schema features"
in Word or OO.
I have MS-Word 2000 available on a legacy Windows system for when
clients send me stuff in that format to convert; entering "XML" or
"schema" in the help returns zip/zed/nada.
The only OpenOffice 1.x help topics returned for "XML" talk about
import/export; "schema" returns stuff on databases. Maybe this is
something in 2.0?
So what *are* they doing? Again, examples are good...
If you were not aware of the XML developments in MS Word (Pro) 2003 and
Open Office 2.x, then I can very well understand your arguments, they
were completely valid arguments a few years ago (and some points still
remain valid).
There are still problems, but the advancements are improving. There are
a lot of applications out there now that are *trying* to provide a good
WYSIWYG interface to XML based documents and data. They now provide
features to structure the documents based on xml schemas, DTDs of
similar templates.
In MS Word 2003 look under Tools>Templates and Addins>XML Schema
In OO 2.x look under Tools>XML Filter Settings
OO 1.x had it too. I had set up DocBook in it, but was frustrated by
the then primitive implementation, and just went back to coding in a
text editor. (I often tend to not perserve).
XMLSpy is trying to do everything, but I don't think you can go from
Office type applications to it. I think it requires dedicated training,
but in the right hands and right organisation, a great tool.
I also agree with you that in *real* content management systems, content
has to be managed down to the paragraph level to contain information on
authoring and revisions, etc.
