I didn't have this impression, but then maybe CMUCL is better supported.  Or
it could be that I checked out the sources at a lucky moment (a few months

I _tried_ to use it. I had problems similar to yours. After upgrading to the
cvs version things got much much better. YMMV of course. 

BTW the paserve mailing list at sf may be a more appropriate forum for this
kind of problem.
