| I read this list on gmane.org and I do not see any spam.

Indeed, it is getting out of hand, and if nothing is done at the list
level, we will each have to start filtering the list or else just grit
our teeth and bear it.

At the risk of stating the obvious, there are several strategies open:

0. Making the list moderated. (But who wants to be the moderator?)
But I enjoy the immediacy of the unmoderated list. Often, we can
get answers to our questions faster than a moderator could approve
   our posts.

1. Make the list semi-closed to non-subscribers, bouncing any
submissions from non-subscribers to a moderator for approval.
Personally, I dislike this option because I am subscribed with a
different address than my usual one, for the purpose of easy mail
   sorting at my end.

2. Running submissions through an extra challenge/response round. One
example of this policy is the "qsecretary" on Dan Bernstein's qmail
list. For every incoming message, it computes a cryptographic hash
of the message, then sends a message to the sender instructing
him/her to respond to a certain address with the hash. When the
expected response arrives, the message is automatically posted.
I think this is a good system, though I admit it's a bit annoying.

3. Apply a spam filter (perhaps a Bayesian one) to the incoming
submissions, passing the suspect ones to a moderator.

4. Others?

I think I would favour option 2 myself, but it is probably too much
work to set it up. Option 3 should be fairly easy to implement.
(Is there a CL based Bayesian spam filter freely available? I use
spambayes for my own mail.)
