My first reaction was "is it really too slow?"

I tried it then

(defun read-it()
  (loop for a from 1 to 100000 do
        (with-open-file (f fn :direction :input)
                        (loop for a from 0 to 1000
collect
                              (read f)))))

And it ran for about an hour. That surprised me.

This is on a pentium3 - 800.

It's a lot faster in clisp on my 1.3ghz g4, about
three times.

I imagine a C program could munge the files to binary,
and isn't there a function to read floats as binary?
