Wally, Thanks for the kind words and great web connect to your work! To answer your questions:
1) both spars were scratched up, so I stripped them about 2 years ago. 2) Both were previously anodized but in some places the anodizing gave way, so you can see some pitting. 3) On the boom, and also on the mast (which is currently not subject to repair/refinish) there are long stainless bolts from one side to the other, close to, but not exactly where there was a bail for the main sheet. I thought it was meant to prevent the cross section from collapsing when under a lot of load. I don't know how to get them out and back in again because it looks like there is some kind of sleeve. Cheers! What is the consensus for a re-finish: 1) Re-anodize? 2) Powder coat? 3) Aluminum primer, epoxy filler/primer and polyurethane? One more question, how do you remove and reinstall those long bolts that go through the spar and have a stiffening function when fixed close to where the bails would be installed? I don't think you need to. I refinished my mast and boom in 2001, and it has held up perfectly. <http://www.wbryant.com/StellaBoat/Projects/newrig/mast/mast.htm> I did put another coat of paint on it in 2008, but only because I had the rig out for other reasons. It was in good shape.h The paint wasn't shiny any more, but that wasn't a problem. I actually think Rust-O-Leum might work just as well as Interlux one-part. Sealing the metal with Alumiprep and Alodine worked really well, and you can see pics of the labels for that stuff on my new tank page. <http://www.wbryant.com/StellaBoat/Projects/fuel/newtank/index.htm> Your spin pole is a different matter. Is it anodized now? Those things get banged up pretty often, and I'd bet paint would chip off. When you say 'those long bolts' I'm assuming that you're talking about your standing rig tang attachments. Without seeing the rig, I wouldn't give advice as there's a number of ways those are built, and one can't even be sure they're original. Although it is in a position that minimizes pitch, roll and yaw effects, it is very susceptible to water and humidity in the bilge which may over time render it inoperable and you are experiencing magnetic interference. I have mounted compasses in many locations always chosen with avoidance of magnetic interference as the primary consideration. I suggest you find a spot which is high and dry and away from wires, pots and pans in sinks, pocket knives in pants pockets on deck, etc. etc. Crazy Ivan can be a dangerous guy when you least expect him. It is currently mounted right beside the Display/Keypad which is on the Port Cockpit bulkhead between the Propane locker seat and the Port cockpit seat.? Seems like it should be mounted further down closer to the centre line per the instructions. > _______________________________________________ > This List is provided by the C&C Photo Album > http://www.cncphotoalbum.com/ > [email protected] > -------------- next part -------------- > An HTML attachment was scrubbed... > URL: <http://cnc-list.com/pipermail/cnc-list_cnc-list.com/attachments/20120708/12 b4d3a2/attachment-0001.html> > > ------------------------------ > > _______________________________________________ > CnC-List mailing list > [email protected] > http://cnc-list.com/mailman/listinfo/cnc-list_cnc-list.com > > > End of CnC-List Digest, Vol 78, Issue 14 > **************************************** -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Precise cause is unknown until I tear it down, but may be a hole in a piston or faulty rings. This pressurized the crankcase and blew all the engine oil out the dipstick into the bilge. A lovely mess to clean up. I managed to stop the engine before it seized. Investigation suggests a rough total cost of removal, rebuilding and installation of around $7K. After that I will still have a 31 year old raw water cooled engine with some new parts. Mmmmm?? I have found a used reasonably priced Yanmar 3GM30 in good condition with which to repower the boat. The engine's torque and horsepower curves are a bit different but I believe that, once I re-pitch my 3 blade Maxprop, I should get reasonably close performance from the new engine. It is also fresh water cooled. Has anyone got a Yanmar 3GM30 in a Landfall 38 or similar boat? Any comments, please? Thanks. Oh yeah, contributions will be gratefully received. Grrrr. New engine, transmission and electrical ..... contact me off list if you want more info.
