Woah...that is huge. I pay $800 for $75,000 coverage in Cape Cod.

Where you live is important on boat insurance. Down here in hurricane land,
BoatUS is off the charts, as are many other insurers.

BoatUS wanted close to 2K to insure my 1974 Bristol 30 with a $10,000 hull
value, while Progressive provides the same coverage for $742 on a 12-month
policy.

I agree with David -- it's definitely worth the couple of hundred $$$ a year to
go with BoatUS.  I've had a few claims for various reasons over fifteen years
(most charter-related) that they covered quickly and fully, without complaint
and with no increase in premium.  My 1979 Landfall 38 has an agreed-value
policy that would more than cover loss of the boat (especially in the current
market), and is reasonable in cost.  The extras they include, like towing, oil
spill coverage, wreck removal and such are things most homeowner insurer-type
policies will NOT cover.  Read your ploicy closely.

BoatUS just does boats -- and they do them well.

Another possible twist...

I know two folks who lost their masts...with very different experiences.   The
first unfortunate soul got nothing from the carrier while the second got a
replacement mast with no problems.   Without further detail methinks they both
got what they paid for.

With that in mind and as I was going offshore I called BoatUS (my carrier) and
asked the what if.   Specifically I was curious if the mast replacement cost X
would they then depreciate it to Y and leave me with the differential?  Their
reply was that as long as the replacement bill does not exceed insured value of
the whole boat they would replace the mast.

In my opinion the few hundred bucks a year savings (how much I don't know as I
have not priced it around) for lesser coverage is not worth the hassle and
potential problems during a very stressful time.
