James, I'm with Dennis on this one. The only knock against the external switches is that if something in the bilge rolls under the switch, it could stick on and drain your battery. I and many more have decided to live with this risk.
Give me a shout offline (ie: ring me in the office) and we can chat further. I prefer a bilge pump with separate float switch. I've found the Rule bilge pumps to be very reliable but have seen failures with the Rule-A-Matic float switches. There are reliable float switches on the market. Check out: http://www.tefgel.com/contain.php?param=pumpswitch_price Dennis C. We have RULE MATE 1100 installed on our C&C 34 (1982). The automatic function hasn't worked for months (we check her regularily). It seems that RULE gets a bad rap in general from the blogs/rantings I have encountered. Does anyone have any recommendations as to other brands and what is the expected life of a bilge pump? By that I mean are Bilge pumps something that get replaced every year or bi yearly as a matter of routine? Best James "Whisper" C&C 34 1982
