Jonathan,

The pipe and fittings are polybutylene which was used extensively between the 
70's and mid  90's. I have it on my boat and have had some trouble finding 
replacement fittings when I re-plumbed the water heater. There are some 
websites which still carry these products, but it's being replaced with pex 
which, as Jake says, is much easier to work with.
