Nate, I recommend checking the dampening plate (if your engine/reduction gear) has one. On several engine/reduction gear combos I have worked on the dampening plate failed (after 20 years, some of it in charter service) or the plate was close enough to worn out to be replaced when the reduction gear was off the engine.
Here is a dampening plate description I found with a quick internet search: Most small engines arrive with a basic dampener plate that is mounted on the back of the flywheel that accepts the input shaft of the gearbox. This plate has a stack of springs that control variances in torque and minor misalignments. Companies such as PYI make specialty dampener plates that help control drive train noise. Calypso's 24 year old Perkins 4-108 with a BG Velvet Drive reduction gear has a distinct rattle when in gear at idle. I believe this rattle is the dampening plate springs moving around in the plate. If I were to have cause to remove the reduction gear I would replace the dampening plate in a heartbeat. If you do pull the engine, motor mount replacement is easy and will noticeable reduce vibration and noise. Probably from the forward seal - where it meets the engine. It's the big flange - I've tried to get in there to tighten bolts but not been able to move them with the little wrenches I could get into the small spaces. Dockside advice is I'll have to have the engine pulled. Meanwhile I'm stopping, checking and filling every 2-4 hours if motoring to keep the tranny fluid at normal levels, and catching the leak in a dishpan under the engine. Any ideas? If I'm paying for engine in and out, what ELSE would people recommend? I'm thinking possibly motor mounts...... and I've always had a small oil leak too (I know, they say Yanmars never leak....).
