I'm using an experimental paint this year that Interlux developed that is
supposed to replace VC-17 and Baltoplate. The yard contacted me one day
and told me that Interlux was looking for 3 boats to test a new product on
here in mid Chesapeake. This new paint is supposedly extremely
environmentally friendly, which is why it is being developed to replace the
current stuff. The painters said they could dip their hands in the paint
can and the stuff would rinse off with water. They also said it didn't
smell and respirators weren't required when painting, although they did use
them. I was certainly skeptical, but willing to give it a try since
Interlux offered to make it right if the paint didn't work out. I had an
ablative paint on the boat but was looking to go to something smoother for
racing. The paint was free and the yard offered to strip the boat down to
the barrier coat and apply 3 coats of this new stuff and burnish it to 600
grit all for the same cost to put another ablative coat on the boat. $600
later and I had a very slick race bottom. So far the paint is working
great. We have had lots of growth this year but my diver says that the
paint is so slick the slime wipes right off with a soft towel. He also
says that the paint seems to be holding up better than the VC-17 on most of
the other boats in the marina. The yard has hauled the boat once to check
the paint and was very pleased with it. They intend to haul it again in 2
weeks or so for another check and I will have it hauled at the end of the
season. If it still looks great when it is hauled at the end of the
season, I'm going with this stuff again if it is offered. Unfortunately I
don't have a name to give you as Interlux didn't have a name on it. The
paint cans were just marked 'experimental' and had my boat name on it. The
other 2 boats that had the stuff put on (a Bene 36.7 and a T-10) are also
very pleased with this paint.

I'll keep you posted on the progress and I'm praying they offer it next
year at an affordable price. I was told that it could go over any existing
paint and that it could be painted over with anything else as well.
