Dennis,

Mine ran for about 6 years including 4 in storage where it went dormant, but
I am not sure going forward. I had to replace my NiCd battery after the
first year and then it ran.

I think there may be a problem with balancing the solar panel with the
battery and not being an electrical engineer, but having to deal with
rechargeable batteries from time to time in my work, I understand their
ability to hold a charge diminishes over time and cycles. I also have heard
contradictory opinions on whether NiCd require you to completely discharge
them then re-charge, or to keep them charged all the time. I heard the the
NiMH variety want to be kept charged. This stuff also affects laptops etc.

I am facing the same situation, having purchased a second unit so I can
accelerate the ventilation out of my holding tank and still trying to figure
out where to put it. Now that I hear about these issues, I am not sure I
want to cut yet another hole in my deck for something that will just die.

Another solution I am considering as I am re-building my deck, is to insert
a 12VDC low amperage computer fan in the dorade box on the "dry" side and
either use a small solar panel to drive it or switchable from boat power to
solar power. I will let the list know how this project goes. Maybe the
electrical engineers on the list can contribute.

Touche's Nicro day/night solar vent has died.? This is the 3rd or 4th one in
about 12 years.? The existing vent is a 3 inch.

I can only find 2 active brands out there, Nicro and Sunforce.? There is
another brand, Sunsei or ICP, but it doesn't seem to be designed for "green
water".? More for being installed on backyard storage sheds. The Sunforce
only comes in a 4 inch which will require enlarging the existing cutout.

Many of the reviews on the Nicro brand cite early failures, like a year or
less.? Most of the failures seem to occur with the newer vents.? Many
boatowners cited good experiences with Nicro vents lasting a decade or
better.

There are threads on cruising forums about repairing them with parts from
the internet.? There are also discussions about NiCAD vs NiMH batteries.?
There are also the DIY projects on installing a muffin fan in the
companionway hatch boards, something I'm not really wanting to do.

All in all, most seem to roll the dice, buy the Nicro and cross their
fingers that it will last a few years.

I just sent an email to Marinco/Nicro citing the poor reviews their Nicro
vents get and asking if they've made any improvements to increase the
service life of the vents.

I'll wait and see what they say.

Any listers want to chime in on this???

I am thinking of getting new spinnaker sheets made up this winter for
Indigo. I will probably go with standard snap-shackles as the Tylaska
shackles are a luxury I do not really need. I was wondering what line is
recommended by other 35MKIII listers, and whether it makes sense to remove
the cover (and how much). I will be sticking with my older guys for at
least another year or so.

Strikes me that you have to find out what the failure is. Battery, or power
supply. NiMH is best choice for batteries in my experience. But you know all
this

I had one of the old 4 inch Nicros which ran trouble free for at least 10
years before the battery died. I took it apart and replaced the battery - I
had to have it specially ordered in from a specialized battery store. It
ran another 5 years but finally the bearings or brushes in the motor failed.
I wish the still made that old version.

I would like to find a source for a new motor as I have heard the same tales
about the newer models. Do you know where?

My holding tank is the stern of the boat and the inlet hose runs up hill
about 15 feet away. To keep the hose free of effluent you have to pump a
lot of water into the system. This soon fills tank, making it PITA to keep
pumping it out. This, of course, made the hose reek.

I've gone ahead and uploaded the drawing of the new holding tank. Any advice
on how to make this as fool proof as possible would be much appreciated:

http://webspace.ocad.ca/~splavsa/pics/SeaSwan/2-6146.pdf

Would it be best to have the fittings ON TOP of the tank? Not sure if I have
the clearance under the v-berth but it seems that would be best no? I'm also
concerned about effluent getting into the vent hoses. This is likely the
stock tank from the 32 but I wouldn't know because the tank I removed was an
"upgraded" stainless steel one. It was plumbed in with hard abs plumbing,
leaking and no doubt soon to develop pinholes. It got tossed right quick.

Hi All. Was reading the head problems thread and came across someone
mentioning something about crossing hoses to prevent backflow at heel. I'm
going to be ordering a new holding tank for my 32 sometime soon and Kracor
has the tank in stock. It's a bow tank. I was originally going to ask them
to move the fitting for the inflow (from toilet) to the starboard side as
that is where my head is and I dont' want really long hose runs .. but this
got me thinking. On a port tack on a heel I can get backflow this way if the
joker valve isn't 100%. Is it standard practice to cross the hose over to
the far side of the tank to prevent this? This is where the fitting
currently is on the tank that they have in stock and apparently, it was made
for another C&C 32. I'm thinking that when beating to weather and changing
tack back and forth there would be plenty of opportunity for waste to
collect in the hose and possibly backflow regardless of which side the hose
connects to. Am I overthinking this?

When I purchased the boat last fall it was a stinky boat. The hoses and head
smelled AWFUL so I threw it all away thinking that I was going to replace
everything before launch. Well, I bought a house before launch and my
financial priorities changes so I didn't get a holding tank into the boat
this year. It's one of the winter projects and I want to make sure I do it
right because I worked hard at "de-stinkifying" the boat and I don't want
any problems moving forward.

Thanks all.

Hi Dennis,

I don't have any recommendations to use as direct replacements.
My old (8+ years) Nicros are okay for now. I say okay because the
"head' unit is starting to get noisy and the deck mount unit will let
in small amounts of water in blustery conditions and probably wets
the motor, it's not okay. I was able to improve it with Moovit
penetrating (similar to PB Blaster) to the motor shaft and let it sit
overnight upside down.
Due to the actions of the head unit I am going to replace the battery
in each unit and do the oil thing.

Since you raise the unreliability issues with the new units I'm glad
I didn't buy replacements when they were on sale this summer. I
wonder if it might be best to replace The Nicros with good passive
units and then vent the boat with a positive pressure fan. Say,
install a muffin fan in the aft partition of the port quarter berth
to blow INTO the boat. This is outta the way and will use existing
aft vents, so there's no competition.

This is a practical strategy for me since I have been gifted a soar
panel kit from Go Power (Carmannah) at the recent West Coast Rendezvous.

Gary, I guess the "Joker" Valve is doing its job of blocking the bad jokes

Bowlines are hard to release under pressure as well.. and if you douse
by letting the guy run , sometimes "catches" occur and a release
mechanism is welcome .

Bowlines might be okay for a cruising/snuffer-sock setup

I thought bowlines were prone to coming loose when not under load. I
should probably go with the soft-shackle
