Dwight

You forgot to mention the $6000 Loran C with its own special charts and
a big ugly antenna.

I have the Standard Horizon CP180. It is very easy to use and though the
screen is small is very useful. You do have to zoom in and out a lot at
times.

We raced from Newport to Bermuda on a Montivideo 43 that is only a few
boats down from Rich Knowles boat at RNSYS. Erwin has a Raymarine large
chart plotter at nav station but has a Std Horizon CP190i at the helm
that he stores below when not in use. Is on a swivel so persons other
than helmsman can also use if necessary. Is a relatively inexpensive
unit so he also has a spare one (CP180i I believe stored below).

Back to the good old (or just old) days .. Our C&C36 had radar and loran
C when loran C first came out. Was great but the two units combined for
$12000 in 1981. A lightning strike had the original Loran replaced with
a much easier to use unit that was far better for $1200 a few years
later.

Danny
You will always like your chart plotter. I have sailed here in St.
Margaret's Bay for over 30 years now and I would not do without
one...best
navigational tool going. I got one when they first became common for
boats,
before that I had my handheld gps (Garmin 45xl) and paper charts and
before
that charts, a compass, speedo, parallel rule and dividers. The chart
plotter made sailing enjoyable for that special someone often referred
to as
the Admiral...

Back then I chose a Standard Horizon cp 150 with cmap charts. It has a 5
inch colour display and it is mounted on the binnacle guard. I see no
need
for a larger screen if it is mounted where you need it, at the helm that
is.

If I were buying nowadays I would stick with Standard Horizon, same size
would do and I believe now they call it the cp190i and it costs 499.95
at
the Binnacle. Of course you still need to purchase the cmap charts that
you
require for the area you intend to sail in.

Hi Wally,

I live in Massachusetts and sail around cape cod and the islands. I'm
just
beginning in these waters and I find myself checking the charts alot.
I'm
thinking I'd be a lot more at ease if I had a ready reference right
there on
the helm. I guess I already do in the old garmin. It doen't show ant
depths though and the fishfinder...well if that is telling me the water
isn't deep enough, it's probably too late.

I guess I'm just looking for a little peace of mind. Although, I'm sure
the
more I'm out there the less I'll need the plotter. I imagine we'll be
quite
content sailing here for some years to come. It's just the learning
curve
I'm trying to help along.

Right. You can download a heck of a lot of charts for free, so that's
check it out before considering 'free charts' as added value.

Danny, where the heck do you live and where do you sail? I have this
thing called 'cruiseheimers' and my attention span is limited. You
probably already said this...

Just go sailing, dude, and let the force be with you.

Wal
