Ah, the joy of wind shear. Warmish air over cold water can give you fits. We frequently see the windex doing something totally different from what my skin tells me. One tack you are going dead upwind, the other is a beam reach. Combined with a bunch of current, sometimes the windex is next to useless. I generally use it as a rough indicator of what is going on but trim the sails so the telltales work together. Sometimes that's just not possible.
