Adam, I sailed two Transpac races on a C&C 39 back in the 70's. For the 1977 Transpac this 39 had the original short low aspect rudder and the boat was a broach coach.
For 1979 the owner replaced the original rudder with the deeper design that looked similar but was significantly longer. The boat did perform better off the wind. I have read of other 39 owners that changed to a modern rudder design to improve off the wind control. Do you know if By and By has the original short rudder? Martin Calypso 1970 C&C 43 (with deeper rudder as original was lost off the US East Coast in 1974.) We went for an offshore distance strategy, to the Island of Gotska Sandön and via various other checkpoints back to the starting point. We did OK, about 140 NM. Half of the time we had a broad reach of about 18 kts and approx 2m waves from aft. She was crazy, very very difficult to handle and twice we jived inadvertantly so the question is, has anyone changed rudder, and if so is there a better design around? I am OK with the spade concept but I think it needs to go deeper.
