One of the important factors for me in choosing to own a C&C 35 MKII was something called "motion comfort factor" in the sailing calculator predictions. I knew that I would be mostly doing cruising versus racing with the boat but nevertheless I wanted a boat that had a reasonably high predicted speed potential and I knew from experience that those I would have on board would appreciate greater motion comfort in the coastal cruising that I expected to be doing. Further, the PHRF rating one the boat suggested that I could expect it to perform well.
According to the sailing calculator motion comfort is interpreted as follows: the range in the motion comfort number will be from 5 to 60+ with a Whitby 42 at the mid 30's. The higher the number the more comfort in a sea. This figure of merit was developed by the Yacht designer Ted Brewer and is meant to compare the motion comfort of boats of similar size and types. For a 35 MKII the calculated motion comfort factor is 28.96 and for a 35 MKIII it is 22.26 and for a C&C Landfall 38 it is 27.29. My experience with the 35 MKII has shown it to be very comfortable in rough seas and also that it can deliver on its rated speed potential. I believe the calculator provided useful and accurate advice that helped me to make a final decision on what boat to satisfy my anticipated use. Do any others on this list have opinions on the relevancy of such calculated predictions? For example, the common mixing elbow (124070-13520 Mixing Elbow) which Bob pointed out lists for $270, can be purchased much cheaper from several vendors. I purchased one recently for $69.95 from MMI Seattle.
