Hi, Kate -- the only experience I have with the LF42 was looking at one called "Barefoot" at Barker's Island Marina in Superior, WI (west end of Lake Superior) several years ago. She had been "ridden hard and put away wet" after several years in the charter trade in the Caribbean; and she looked it. My impression down below was of a dark collection of small spaces (granted, it was a cloudy day…), and it was obvious the woodwork below had seen better days (lots of UV wear and signs of water intrusion everywhere).
These boats are large center-cockpit boats with beamy hulls; as C&C's, they should sail fairly well, but these were really built for the charter trade, not for club racing. Having said that, I'd probably take one over a 29 if you were going to be out in big waves. :^) I guess, get a good survey, and take a really good, long, hard look at the boat you're interested in; a 42-footer can be a handful for a couple with limited experience, even on the Great Lakes. Where on the Great Lakes are you planning on sailing?
