Eric, Sorry about his loss!
The ONLY benefit to the wing keel is the shallow draft. It will not point as well. Lots of Catalinas on the Chesapeake have them, which is one of the reasons I own a C&C. The 30 tall rigs are a little tender when the wind kicks up. The standard rig will not break any records.
