Copericus published his theory about heliocentricity in 1543, and Galileo
was tried by the Inquisition for writing about it in 1633. Europe knew the
earth was nor flat by the late 1400s (though they thought it a lot smaller
than it is), but thought it was the center of the universe until the 1700s.
Heck, the Vatican only acknowledged that Galileo wasn't a heretic for
writing about heliocentricity about 20 years ago.

For a good explanation of early methods of celestial navigation and the
sextant, plus an explanation of how the Pacific Islanders migrated and
navigated over great distances, see a book called "Do Dolphins Ever Sleep?".
The book has a wealth of interesting information about a wide range of
nautical topics.
