IIRC there is a similar but reverse direction for sailing from the old Spanish base in San Blas to Nootka Sound. Something about sailing NW until you smell Mai Tai mix then tack and sail NE to Vancouver Island.
Maybe the instruction was to go NW until the butter turns solid.
