FYI, I have a Brion Toss wand, as well as the New England Rope, Samson and a
couple of other fids, splicers, etc. I find that the Toss wand is sometimes
difficult to use. With the wand, the line is folded over and thus essentially
double the size. This makes it difficult to pull through the cover or core,
depending.
The wand seems to work better than the others on uni-directional core lines.
The hollow fids with pushrod seem to be the most dependable. The New England
splicers are OK but the line has to be taped onto the fid. Unless you use
slick tape, it's hard to push through.
All in all, the secret is to loosen up the line by pushing the cover up the
line before you start.
Line that has been loaded is very, very hard to loosen up and therefore very
difficult to splice. That's why I buy halyards 10-15 feet longer than needed.
When the eye splice end fails, I can end for end the line and put another eye
splice in the end that hasn't been loaded.
Couple days ago, a guy on my pier hired a kid to splice an eye in a halyard.
It was a used halyard. The kid couldn't quite finish the splice by hand. He
tied it to a tree and pulled it with his pickup truck. POW! The line broke.
Oops. The halyard was ruined. I walked up as he and the boatowner were
negotiating a remedy. I told the kid he shouldn't accept a job to splice a
used line. I also told him that he would have been better off to use one of
the boat's winches to finish the splice. He could have controlled the tension
better with the winch. Live and learn.
