The boats are really nice! They are great for coastal cruising, can race to their PHRF, are sweet to sail, and imo, one of C&C's prettiest designs.
I believe the boat is solid glass below the waterline, but am not sure where you'll find balsa elsewhere in the topsides. (Deck of course is cored) When you talk about compression under the mast step, it's really a couple of issues: One is the mast step compressing over time due to deterioration beneath the step. Another is when the hull shape flexes (due to rig tension) and causes the mast step to sink. Both can be solved by a compression post and reinforcing the rib that is just aft of the step (and normally has a little notch cut out of it, ffs!) Other potential issues coming at you would be replacing the rod rigging if it hasn't been done recently. The standard Yanmar is a little underpowered for motoring in chop, but most 33's spend their time under sail. However, if you plan to cruise extensively, you might plan for a bigger engine down the road. (Although if you plan to cruise extensively, go for a LF38) That's my $0.02 as a former 33 owner for 6 years.
