Wasn't there some discussion a few months ago about this and someone suggested
it might be a motor, like perhaps a domestic water pump kicking on and off,
setting up a magnetic field?

My Autohelm 4000+ gets a workout every summer.  We motor to Solomons and back,
13 hours each way.  It usually does a pretty good job, but once in a while
makes a 90 turn and tries to run us aground.  I like it, but I also need to
keep an eye on it.
