The best way to find out is to put a small child in the lazarette and motor around for a few hours. If the kid has blue lips or is non-respnsive at the end of the day you might have an exhaust leak.

If you have water running down into the bilge from somewhere back there, or see unexplained soot around the back of the boat, you might have a problem. 25 years is definitely old for an exhaust hose, but it might be better as a winter project if you can make it through the summer.
