I bought 2 props from Martek and learned that the main axial pin comes in 3
sizes because the hole in the hub and the blades will enlarge over time and
then you need to have it machined for the next larger pin. A friend did this
for me with a Bridgeport miller he owns. It worked like a charm and took all
of the slop out of the folding movement after 8 seasons of use on the original
factory pin. Of course Martek will do this, but I was lucky to have a friend
with the right equipment help me.

Hi Sam,

The rule (measuring tape) technique seems to be the most accurate. maybe the
best approach is to do it once and when completed, use the Loos gauge and
record the numbers. That way you can repeat the same set-up every year (if you
step your mast every spring).

The owner of my previous boat a 29 mkII hull #312 needs some prop info. The
boat has a folding two blade that I am pretty sure was factory installed. It no
longer unfolds properly and vibrates. He has found someone in California that
will rebuild it. He is also looking at replacing it. No one he has talked to
knows the shaft size and taper. He also needs the diameter and pitch. Any
information you all can provide will be a great help.

Hi David, I have hull number 506, RH 14x10, 7/8" shaft. Martec, had mine
rebuilt by them due to favorable comments from this list, been great since,
maybe six years ago. I attached a small pic, but it's held up, may not go
through.

Here's one of the better explanations about tuning your rig:
http://www.riggingandsails.com/pdf/selden-tuning.pdf

Buy or borrow a Loos gauge. You can't guess this stuff.

Shut the fuel off. Unscrew the cup. Pull out the filter. Insert a new one.
Fill the cup with new fuel. Screw the cup back on. Open the vent.
Pump the priming/lift pump lever until the filter cup is fully vented.

In case you don't know, the lift pump is on the right side of the engine, about
halfway down and one third of the way forward of the flywheel. It will be the
first thing on the engine that the fuel flows into. The filter is next in line
moving forward. The lift pump should have a little flipper that you can push
up and down to manually prime the system.

FYI - The last little press of the flipper is where the actual pumping happens.
If this is really short, the pump is probably on the lobe of the cam. Turn
the engine over a bit to get on the flat part. Hope that makes sense.

Jim,

Love the fact that you you are learning to work on your engine and as you are
finding out you have a wealth of information available to you here on the list.

One word of caution (first hand experience talking here) after you play with
the fuel system make sure you have all the air out of it. The dang thing may
crap out at the most inopportune time with just a wee bit of air.

Run it in gear under load for a bit and listen to it. It is fairly obvious
if it is happy.

I had a yanmar mechanic tell me not to vent at the "bleed" screws cause
they strip too easy and cause problems. He suggested bleeding the inlet
and outlet fittings of the filter. Same thing for the injector pump
(forward, next in line after the filter). I had a situation during the
delivery from Brooklyn NY to Solomons, MD in the C&D Canal where the bleed
screw popped out of the inlet fitting for the injector pump. A little JB
Weld and an hour later we were back under motor.

You should also get VERY familiar with bleeding the fuel system of air. I
recently, accidentally, ran out of gas while motoring in 6-8 foot breakers
and 20-25 kts of wind. We got the sails up and could have continued
indefinitely except that the next port was 4nm up a shallow and narrow
channel and the sun was setting. After having 10 gallons of diesel
delivered to the middle of the Chesapeake Bay (Bay Marker #42), we started
the engine and proceeded to take the sails down. At almost the same time
the engine started sputtering and then died. Various restarts were
attempted but it was pretty quickly determined that there was air in the
lines. Fortunately I was very familiar with venting. From the time I left
the topsides to investigate the dead engine to being back under power was
probably less than 10 minutes. And that obviously includes all the time
diagnosing/restarting, and time finding tools.

A new gas gage made it to the top of the projects list!
