An integral oil change pump! Now that is an interesting idea. Might make a nice addition, especially if it didn't leak or drip. The hand pump supplied with my engine is an icky mess in a plastic bag. I bought a vacuum extractor which is much easier to keep clean, but the old pump is a backup. I am always reluctant to toss anything that might come in useful as a backup.
As far as fuel lift pumps go, the YSB series of engines had electric fuel pumps standard, which makes things like filter changes a no brainer. Don't know why they were discontinued after 2 years, unless it was to make the engines independent of 12 volts in theory. No one that I know actually starts diesel engines by hand. The electric pumps seem to be at least as reliable as the mechanical diaphram pumps in practice. I don't see why you couldn't hook one up instead of, or in series with, the mechanical pump. If I recall correctly, the fuel can be "pulled" through most electric pumps if they are turned off. My brother had a race car that was set up that way back in the 70's to enhance fuel flow and work as a backup. Ended up having to crack each of the injectors to bleed the darn thing. Why isn't the Yanmar self-bleeding like other engines. To think of it, why does it not have an integral pump to aid changing the oil too. One word of caution (first hand experience talking here) after you play with the fuel system make sure you have all the air out of it. The dang thing may crap out at the most inopportune time with just a wee bit of air. Run it in gear under load for a bit and listen to it. It is fairly obvious if it is happy. David F. If this is really short, the pump is probably on the lobe of the cam. Turn the engine over a bit to get on the flat part. Hope that makes sense. Unscrew the cup. Pull out the filter. Insert a new one. Fill the cup with new fuel. Screw the cup back on. Open the vent. Pump the priming/lift pump lever until the filter cup is fully vented. In case you don't know, the lift pump is on the right side of the engine, about halfway down and one third of the way forward of the flywheel. It will be the first thing on the engine that the fuel flows into. The filter is next in line moving forward. The lift pump should have a little flipper that you can push up and down to manually prime the system.
